Land(ed) and site(d)

Back at my parent’s, the normal discussion topics would be a mixture of the neighbourhood and world stories, gadgets and mythology, cricket and rib tickling comedies and of course office politics. When I learned that I am going to join a big family post wedding, I felt the conversation topics would now get interesting with the addition of many unique characters.

To my dismay, I found I landed into a family, whose world spins around lands and sites.

There is one area in which the family is highly knowledgable, to the extent that they can be called HOWREs a.k.a Highly Obsessed With Real Estate

The world of real estate and construction. Each HOWRE is a civil engineer without a degree.  Zero theoretical but 100% practical knowledge.

Apparently, each of MIL’s and FIL’s siblings have built their own homes on the lands they purchased, including them. Their fathers, mothers, grandparents and forefathers did the same. The current working generation got all the engineering skills as inheritance, which they duly implement after having technical discussions near and far, now and then. If I have to single out a particular quirk prevailing in them, it is their absolute disinterest in buying ready-made houses or apartments. Everything has to be done from scratch. And no architect business too. Right from scouting of the land, to registering it, to getting the quotes for raw materials, to going to the length and breadth of the city to get that perfect granite stone and tap fittings, to overlooking the mason’s work, to designing each and every part of the house, from drilling to plotting, every working knowledge is possessed to the HOWRE.

When I got married into the family, there were two house constructions going on. Every Sunday, instead of going around the city, I would be politely asked if I was interested in checking out the ceramic tiles or the bath fittings. Not to appear as a snob and eager to mingle with all, I tagged along with them one day. After one Sunday, which involved us going from one place to another the whole day and me getting a near sunstroke, I asked them to carry on their eureka moments without me.

I thought things came to an end after the house-warming ceremonies of the two said houses. Before I could finish my question to MIL as to what would be the new point of discussion going forward now that no more construction related work is pending, came the phone call from a cousin, saying he is interested to purchase a new land for investment purpose. Later I got to know that this site-seeing is more interesting than constructing a house altogether. In came the older HOWRE’s with their immensely accumulated knowledge on and thus continues the land-brick-sand saga at my place.

It has latched on to Zack’s friends too. If at all they want to purchase any land, they take away the happy-to-help FIL and eager-to-watch BIL’s along with them. Zack plays the communicator in case of language barriers.

The ladies of the family are a notch higher than the men. They never seem to tire out of constructing houses and discussing ‘sites’.

I have an inkling that if at all another life starts developing inside me in future, the soul will enter the world with a full working knowledge of how to construct a house.

  1. Ha ha ha !!! I can understand… off late my best friend has this habit… everywhere and all the time he can only think of what is the land price and real estate… I guess people do get obsessed with it… but people like me who are inheriting my parent’s house it has never been anything like that ! πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

Just finished extension of our house last year and the 8 months were a serious pain and I was happy to get it done and over with.

  2. My dad is the same too.. he finishes one house construction and then he will start planning to renovate the showroom.. when that is done he will buy a shop for one Uncle & then renovate another uncle’s shop.. so much so that his plumbers, contractors & builders & painters are never out of job!!

Btw.. we are constructing our house, plan bheju kya?? koi tips.. ideas.. from your folks?? πŸ˜‰

    • I get that πŸ™‚ Plumbers, electricians contact numbers hold a unique place in the telephone diary πŸ˜‰

Arre bhej do, am sure my FIL and BIL will have some or the other ideas to add more space into your house πŸ˜›

  3. Dear Lord! That is one reason my family is absolutely terrified of constructing our own house. The idea of standing in the sun all day to watch the proceedings is horrible! So a ready-made ready-to-move house it is for us.

    • I have tried to make them understand about the benefits of a ready-made apartment, but they have an innate desire to see the rooms designed by themselves. I already told you they are eccentric πŸ˜›

  4. ha ha ha ha ha

You have a very interesting family……

In case we decide to do something extra in our new flat we know whom to get in touch with *wink* *wink*

  5. With the amount of responses you got to the post interested in your family’s knowledge of land and house making , i think that you should simply resign your job and put up a post , saying you became a land consultant. You’ll definitely make more money, and with your blog around, you wont have to shell out advertising costs πŸ˜€

    • The family has knowledge, not me πŸ˜›
Even I have told my in-laws umpteen times to open a consulting business, but they themselves tell us who else apart from their progeny will listen to the multiple theories and not run away πŸ˜†

  6. ha ha ha v interesting family… Now I know whom to consult when I need help in any construction related queries… Lol on the little one coming out with all the knowledge into this world πŸ™‚

  7. Well most of my family members (like 95%) live in houses they have designed and constructed (sometimes architect helps) and so I can udnerstand this post. But I don’t see such an obsession though, not yet!
You have a very very passionate family though πŸ˜› But looksl ike Zack is not too affected though, no?

  8. I would love to do that – choose everything from the tiles to the tap fittings and build my own house from scratch, where everything has been personally chosen by me! But time constraints and money constraints ensure that that is not always possible.

We have been having immense troubles finding a decent house for my parents. Now I know whom to ask for help. πŸ™‚

LOL @ the last line of your post.

    • Hope you get to fulfil your dream of building a from-scratch home soon, in the near future πŸ™‚

In case you are looking for land to construct a house, my in laws have a full list of do’s and don’ts πŸ˜‰

The last line will be definitely true 😐

    • Me too, TGND! I would love to do that too! Hopefully one day! We had bought a plot long back, and had hired an architect to do the design, and I can proudly tell you, that I did a better job than her πŸ™‚ I had so much fun designing everything. It’s another story that it never got constructed – or should I say, not yet. Fingers crossed, one day.

Visha. I totally get your family πŸ™‚ Although, I am a wee bit more practical, I don’t mind an apartment, until I can build my home πŸ™‚ We live in an apartment(which we own), but I still talk of our ‘own place’, which of course is the one we will biuld from the scratch πŸ™‚

      I know, I’m crazy πŸ™‚

      • Smitha, I hope the time comes soon when you would fulfil your dream of building a from scratch home πŸ™‚ If you did a job better that the architect, that is so commendable..say wow πŸ˜‰

  9. Yaar please help my family. We have been planning renovation for such a long time and even my family is least interested in hiring an architect. We can ourselves do it all. Go to different ready-to-sell flats and get latest ideas. Visit different marble-granite-tiles-bath fittings shops and survey everything. And living in a joint family the views normally end up in discussion and confusion only, never a conclusion. Maybe your in-laws can help in some decision making… πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜€

    • PS: Another soul in the future with pre-birth construction knowledge.. Or maybe a construction business owner in making… Construction businessmen mint money like anything… Look at the greener pasture…Dream on girl…:-P πŸ˜€ πŸ˜‰

    • There are so many confusions at home while they discuss that the noise level keeps on increasing, many a times I simply shut myself in a room and put on the TV πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  10. ahahahaha!!! HOWRE!! Nice name! πŸ˜› Well, at least its a refreshing change from the regular politics & sports talks in my family! We just depend on the builders for the ready made houses! Good going with the knowledge though!! You can actually end up ‘making’ your dream house one day!! πŸ˜€

  11. Oh well my family too could have been called the HOWRE had me & my brother not been born with total disinterest in learning the tricks of building houses. So the knowledge runs (though not the frequent discussion bit) in our family but my wires are insulated πŸ˜›

  12. I would say my dad pucca belongs to the HOWRE category, everybody consults himself including inlaws. But I have never seen the whole family being interested I real estate including women :).
